COVID-19 Pandemic: CATASTROPHE TO WOMEN and CHILDREN
As per the COVID-19 impacts such as fall of country’s economy, Increased death of people and major increase in the spread of the Corona Virus, a third eye should be sent to most vulnerable member of the society children, women, people with disabilities and the elderly who are suffering during isolation period during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Many countries are reporting many cases of domestic and sexual violence as well as physical violence against children such as child labor, Female genital mutilation (FGM), forced marriages, corporal punishment and rape.
Tanzania being among the affected countries, studies have shown a flash increase in the number of unintended pregnancies to hundreds in just three months after the lockdown.
This crisis has magnified the immoral acts because the resources and access to services become even more restrained to be easily accessed. This is the right time to act right and protect a girl child from further violence, emotional breakdown and stressful environment she can be exposed to during this COVID-19 Pandemic.
We need to respond immediately with life saving strategies to these vulnerable group that need medical treatment and psychosocial support and any legal presentation in relation to violence.
The major increase in reported cases of GBV and violence against Children since the start of the pandemic is accelerated by several factors including;
- financial hardships due to the fear of movement that one may contact the virus especially to the people working in informal sector depending on daily wages for survival, this exposes a girl child to the maximum condition to easily get pregnant,
- Women/ children are locked up at home with their oppressors and they cannot report the violence due to the restrictions in movement imposed by the authorities,
- Confinement at home under high level of stress and fear can produce a stressful environment that can precipitate violence,
- Disruption of programs intended to minimise violence, FGM, Early marriages since to the eruption of the pandemic has also favored major increase of cases on violence.
At this period the children are at a higher risks to all forms of violence including corporal punishments, emotional abuse, rape, child labor, FGM, Forced marriages, Transactional sex and removing child’s from a protective environment such as school exacerbates these risks.
WHAT SHOULD BE DONE?
Child protection workers should respond to violence against children and GBV cases after the curfew in order to reach out to the vulnerable families for prevention, early detection and referral of cases of violence,
Public awareness raising especially for those at higher risks will be rolled out to promote and protect rights and services provision, Public engagement is also crucial for prevention all people in the community should be responsible for one another reporting of any form of violence witnessed will help save a person from pain and oppression lets educate one another to refrain from violence and promote respectful relationship between one another
Provide mental health and psychosocial support services including online counseling services that will be sufficiently available also health services providers require orientation and equipment for survival centered support that does not increase risk of infection such as face mask, gloves and adherence to the guidelines provided by the health personnels to prevent infection.
I call upon Governmental and Non- Governmental Organizations to take note of the surge increase in violence against women and children ad support the mobilization of resources to strengthen protection mechanism and citizens should take appropriate action to reduce human right abuse in their communities.
Together we can prevent this Health pandemic from becoming a human Right Pandemic.

Dear Woman, Say this to yourself;
I am a strong woman. I don’t sit around feeling sorry for myself, nor let people mistreat me. I don’t respond to people who dictate to me or try to bring me down. If I fall I will rise up even stronger because I am survivor and not a victim. I am in control of my life and there is nothing I can’t achieve, I am proud of the woman I am today because I am strong and i am conquering it all because I am Brave and ambitious, No room for giving up in my Life.
We need women who are so strong they can be gentle, so educated they can be humble, so fierce they can be compassionate, so passionate they can be rational, and so disciplined they can be free, Free from all obstacles and Free from negative thoughts and Perceptions of this people who want to bring you down!!
Be a strong woman. So your daughter will have a role model and your son will know what to look for in a woman when he’s a man.
Whenever they try to pull you down, Stay strong. You must know that you can do this. You are strong. You will make it. Just hang on and keep believing in yourself, always. Make them wonder how you’re still smiling that is the best revenge?
Lets Love Each Other, Respect Each other, Believe in one another the Fight is against Poverty not on each other, Holding one another hands is the best way to walk to the Furthest distance on the Success Road.
